Dear Friends of Greentown Houston,

Earlier this month, we hosted the TEX-E Bootcamp for Climatetech Entrepreneurship, where students from Texas universities connected with educators from the Lone Star State and MIT to learn from leading academic minds in the field of energy innovation, work together on collaborative projects, and gain an enhanced readiness to tackle the climate crisis.

TEX-E is a first-of-a-kind collaboration among The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, University of Houston, Rice University, and Prairie View A&M University—powered by Greentown Labs and MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship—to train and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs to lead the energy transition and to share in the massive economic opportunity it entails, while also addressing the existential threat of climate change. We followed the bootcamp up with a meeting of the Carbon to Value (C2V) Initiative’s Year 3 Cohort, which convened the eight carbontech startups in Houston for a day of workshops. The C2V Initiative is a partnership among the Urban Future Lab at New York University-Tandon, Greentown, and Fraunhofer USA and supported by NYSERDA that accelerates the commercialization of carbontech. We have also taken Greentown to our partner corporations, including via a lunch and learn event at Woodside Energy, where our members Elemental Recycling and Fervo pitched their innovations to more than 50 Woodside employees.

This momentum for convening the region's energy transition ecosystem will continue next month at our biggest event of the year—Climatetech Summit! The highly anticipated Climatetech Summit 2023 takes place on Nov. 1 in Houston and will feature a keynote from Houston Advanced Research Center President and CEO John Hall—read more in the events section below.

All this progress among our members, partners, and broader network comes at an exciting time for the energy transition here in Texas, where a multimillion-dollar wind farm is being planned, the Texas grid battery capacity has grown, and the Houston-area was selected as one of seven regions for a $7B federal hydrogen hub investment. This investment will be a huge boon to the energy transition, and could support Greentown startups innovating in hydrogen, such as Varea Energy, Ambient Fuels, Ohmium, and others.

Element Resources has agreed to help the City of Lancaster, CA develop hydrogen-economy infrastructure, supplying hydrogen locally and working with other partners to expand the broader hydrogen-production chain.
CeraPhi completed a geothermal feasibility study on the potential for power generation in Longreach, Australia.
Fervo was named one of the 2023 Climate Tech Companies to Watch by the MIT Technology Review.
Moonshot will work with Purdue University to commercialize its food waste-to-hydrogen technology.
Capture6 was chosen to participate in the Elemental Excelerator’s Cohort 12.
Carbonext was selected to the Techstars Tulsa accelerator program cohort.
Mars Materials’ CEO Aaron Fitzgerald was named to the Gaingels 100 list. Mars Materials was named among the "10 most promising energy tech companies" at Rice Alliance’s Energy Tech Venture Forum, along with Mantel.
