Dear Friends of Greentown,

As a subscriber to our newsletter, you're likely feeling some of the same things we are.

Frustrated. Concerned. Angry. Motivated.

This is a very human moment for everyone in our industry and today we're changing up our typical newsletter introduction to hold space for it.

The first weeks of 2025 have shown us what's at stake in the fight against climate change, the need to accelerate the energy transition, and the enormity of these challenges. Our friends and partners in Los Angeles have faced unprecedented, catastrophic fires. The highly anticipated onslaught of executive orders freezing offshore wind development and IRA funding, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, and more have materialized. To a degree, we knew the new administration would not be a partner in climate action for the next four years, but regardless of our predictions, it's hard to see these headlines roll in.

Here's what else we know. The momentum of this industry is too strong for one administration to stop its progress entirely. Undoubtedly, certain segments of the climate and clean-energy industries will be more directly and negatively impacted, but just as we saw under the first Trump administration, the federal-level vacuum of climate leadership creates an enormous opportunity for state and local governments and the private sector to step in and step up. This includes corporations, investors, academic institutions, philanthropic organizations, and others—many of you, our partners! It also means that it's more important than ever before to support bold, courageous climatetech and energy-transition entrepreneurs who are developing technologies, creating jobs, and generating economic impact despite headwinds.

That's what drives us everyday, and why we're steadfast in our commitment to catalyzing climatetech innovation and commercialization by empowering entrepreneurs.

We know that all of you—from our 200+ members to our 80+ corporate partners to our fantastic investor network, and beyond—share this commitment. So let's use this moment to lift each other up, chart our path forward, and keep at it.

Thiozen signed a conditional commercial agreement with a midstream customer to install its first commercial unit at the customer's Alberta sour-gas plant. This project is backed by a $3.2M award Thiozen received from Emission Reduction Alberta last year.
Phoenix Tailings, which extracts valuable metals and rare earth elements from mining waste using clean energy, closed a $43.8M Series B.
AmpUp, developer of a reliable, flexible, and user-friendly EV-charging platform, is partnering with Hubject. AmpUp will integrate Hubject’s Plug&Charge tech into its charging stations, and Hubject will incorporate AmpUp’s charging stations into its eRoaming network.
Advanced Ionics, the developer of a new class of green-hydrogen electrolyzers aimed at accelerating decarbonization, raised $6.7M from strategic investors including Greentown partner Clean Energy Venture Group.
Cemvita, whose engineered microbes transform CO2 and other wastes into valuable compounds, established a subsidiary in Brazil.

Last Chance: Apply to Go Make 2025 with Evonik

Greentown Go Make 2025 with Evonik will advance sustainable innovations in the personal-care industry that reduce products’ manufacturing-related emissions and end-of-life environmental impact.

The selected participants will have the opportunity to explore potential partnership outcomes with Evonik, including joint development, licensing, investment, and more. We’re seeking applications from startups at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4-7 in these technology areas; learn more and apply by Jan. 30!

ICYMI: Announcing Our New CFO

Earlier this month, we announced the appointment of Naheed Malik as Greentown’s new CFO! Malik is a strategic finance executive with over 25 years of experience, and in this role she’ll lead all aspects of finance, accounting, and human resources for the organization. We’re thrilled to have her on board as Greentown seeks to build on our track record and expand our impact in the years to come!

Canary Media is bringing its live event series to Greentown Houston! Come to Canary Live Houston for an exploration of Texas’s clean-hydrogen economy and how the state became the United States’s largest clean-energy market.

Feb. 6: EnergyBar: Kicking off 2025 [Greentown Boston]
Join our first EnergyBar—Greentown Boston’s signature networking event—of the year to connect with entrepreneurs, investors, students, and other climatetech champions.

Feb. 7: Massachusetts Founders Network Sustainability Challenge [Greentown Boston]
See pitches from the five Massachusetts Founders Network Sustainability Challenge teams—including Greentown members Active Surfaces and SpadXTech—in a competition for a $40k innovation grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

Feb. 11: Climate Salon: The “Other Footprints” [Greentown Boston]
We talk a lot about carbon footprints. But what about carbon's secondary effects on other critical systems, such as biodiversity, land, water and ocean systems, or even urban or energy footprints? At this Climate Salon, attendees will have the chance to hear from experts and explore solutions in these areas.

Feb. 27: Climatetech Intern Fair [Greentown Boston]
Calling all students and soon-to-be graduates! Please join our annual Intern Fair, which focuses on connecting prospective interns directly with Greentown’s cutting-edge climatetech startups. Attendees will be able to connect in person with the startups that are not only developing climatetech solutions, but building a climate workforce that is ready to harness the massive economic opportunities of the energy transition.

March 6: ACCEL Year 3 Kickoff Event [Greentown Boston]
Join us to celebrate the kickoff of Year 3 of ACCEL, an accelerator from Greentown and Browning the Green Space designed to support BIPOC-led climatetech startups. At this event, you’ll hear from the soon-to-be-announced cohort of innovative startups working across agriculture, buildings, electricity, manufacturing, resilience and adaptation, and transportation.

March 13: CERAWeek Transition On Tap [Greentown Houston]
Our March Transition On Tap networking event will take place during CERAWeek 2025, offering the energy-transition ecosystem an opportunity to come together around climatetech during this major Houston conference.
