Dear Friends of Greentown Houston,

Last week, Greentown highlighted groundbreaking climatetech solutions from BIPOC-led startups—and what it would look like to build a more inclusive and diverse industry—at the first-ever ACCEL Showcase.

ACCEL is an accelerator from Greentown Labs and Browning the Green Space that bolsters BIPOC-led startups by offering access to funding, networking connections, resources, and opportunities that structural inequities put out of reach. We’re excited to see the participating startups—Active Surfaces, DrinKicks, EarthBond, florrent, frakktal, SpadXTech—leverage their solutions into scalable products; read about the cohort and event here and watch a recording of the showcase here.

Last week, we also received news of a major collaboration between our longtime member Cemvita and our partner United Airlines: Cemvita will provide United Airlines up to 1 billion gallons of sustainable air fuel. We’re thrilled to see this partnership to bring Cemvita’s climate technology to market; check out more details in EnergyCapitalHTX.

Meanwhile, we’ve had the usual busy month here at Greentown Houston. The Dutch Minister for Taxation, Marnix van Rij, visited the Bayou City to engage with our startups and talk about the Dutch market and the investment climate in the Netherlands. Several of our startups joined a routable discussion with the minister about the potential of scaling climatetech solutions in the country.

If the visits from foreign dignitaries weren’t enough, our startups were also able to share their experiences with the local Houston energy ecosystem at the annual Venture Houston event. Greentown Houston’s Chief Development and Investment Officer Juliana Garaizar, as well as CEOs from our member companies Kanin Energy, Fervo, Cemvita, and Syzygy Plasmonics, were featured speakers. Venture Houston 2023 drew entrepreneurs, venture investors, and ecosystem builders to plug into what’s happening in Houston under the theme of “decarbonization in a digital world.” Read more about it in InnovationMap.

This pitch day will be an impactful gathering of climatetech investors, entrepreneurs, and ecosystem builders, with the goal of connecting and fostering collaboration between the U.S. and Africa’s emerging climatetech markets. Hosted by entrepreneur Jordan Forester and Impact Hub (Lagos), this hybrid event will feature pitches from 10 of Africa’s top climatetech startups and investment opportunities.

As we continue charting the operational needs for our future Houston wet lab, we need your input!

Our experience building a wet lab at our Boston incubator five years ago yielded an impactful innovation space for many cutting-edge startups, but part of what makes Greentown unique is that we build our programs, offerings—and of course our facilities!—based on feedback from our startups, partners, and friends in the climatetech ecosystem. So with that, if you’re an entrepreneur or innovator who could benefit from a wet lab, please let us know what you’d like to see in there. What would help advance your technology? Dedicated fume hoods? Reverse osmosis deionized water? Hazardous waste management? What resources would you benefit from?
