Dear Friends of Greentown Labs,

A major part of our mission at Greentown Labs is to connect ecosystems to advance climate solutions. This was a driver behind our decision to expand to Houston last year—we knew that Boston and Houston’s climatetech networks had much to offer each other.

Today, we announced a program designed to bridge these two cities’ ecosystems: the Texas Entrepreneurship Exchange for Energy (TEX-E). This first-of-its-kind collaboration among Greentown, MIT’s Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship, and universities across Texas will create a powerful student-driven entrepreneurship ecosystem in Houston, focused on energy innovation and implementing lessons learned from building a successful ecosystem in the Greater Boston area.

TEX-E’s mission is to train and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs to lead the energy transition and to share in the massive economic opportunity it entails, while also addressing the existential threat of climate change. As part of the program, participating students have access to mentorship with Greentown’s climatetech entrepreneurs, networking events, career opportunities, and cross-learning with MIT, including the TEX-E energy ventures short course that was held at Greentown Houston this fall.

The partnership spanning two of the United States’ great cities—Houston and Boston—will have benefits that extend far beyond the boundaries of university campuses. In Houston, it will help ensure that the city remains an economic leader as the future of the energy industry evolves. In Boston, innovation from universities will find fertile ground to scale in partnership with energy industry leaders. Nationally and globally, this partnership will accelerate efforts toward solving a massive, generational challenge.

The founding institutions of TEX-E are Rice University, Texas A&M University, Prairie View A&M University, University of Houston, and The University of Texas at Austin. Over time, the collaboration may expand to include other universities.

Climatetech Summit + Upcoming Greentown Go Events

Fall is our busiest season for events, and we have several exciting opportunities to connect with the climatetech ecosystem coming up!

The Greentown Labs Climatetech Summit—our biggest event of the year—is happening next week on Nov. 2 in Houston and Nov. 3 in Boston! Join us at Greentown Boston on Nov. 16 for an EnergyBar to celebrate the kickoff of Go Move 2022—a Greentown Go startup-corporate partnerships accelerator program focused on decarbonizing transportation, in partnership with BASF and Magna—and see pitches from the startup finalists.
At the Carbon to Value Initiative Year 2 Final Showcase on Dec. 1 in New York, attendees will hear from the eight exciting Year 2 cohort startups shaping the future of the carbontech industry as they each present their unique solutions, the progress they’ve made over the six months of the Carbon to Value Initiative, and where they are headed next.

Form Energy raised a $450M Series E for its cost-effective, multi-day energy-storage systems.
American Battery Technology Company was awarded a $57M Department of Energy grant to build a $115M, first-of-kind commercial-scale facility to manufacture battery-grade lithium hydroxide from Nevada-based sedimentary resources.
Fervo Energy executed a PPA to provide 24/7 carbon-free geothermal electricity to 3 million customers in Southern California.
LineVision announced major projects with Greentown’s partner National Grid in New York and the United Kingdom—two projects that will create enough additional capacity to power 600,000 households. This member also raised a $33M Series C.
Syzygy Plasmonics launched CarbonModel.com, an online tool that organizations can use to calculate the carbon intensity of hydrogen and levelized cost of production.
An independent study verified that Nth Cycle’s mineral refining and recycling tech reduces refining emissions by 92 percent over traditional processes.
Our member Moment Energy and alum Sensai Analytics are two of the startups selected for Greentown Go Make 2022, a program with Mitsubishi Corporation (Americas) and supported by the M-Lab Companies. Learn about them and the rest of the cohort here!

Sector Spotlight: Transportation

Q4 is here, and that means it’s time for our next sector spotlight! For the remaining months of the year, we’ll be zeroing in on the transportation industry—which is responsible for 16 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions—and the solutions our members are developing to decarbonize it.

We proudly support 18 startups that are innovating on the cutting edge of transportation, working on everything from portable, on-demand EV chargers (SparkCharge), to electric boat motors (Flux Marine), to mobile Solid Oxide Fuel Cell range-extenders for battery EVs (Solid Ox Motors). We brought together our startups, partners, investor network, and other climate champions in Houston earlier this month for a Transportation Sector Pitch Day—check out the recording here.
